The conversation on “Gender diversity in the digital workplace” remains a glaring issue that must be addressed in all industries, especially the digital works space and history has thought us that when women are politically and socially engaged, societies are more peaceful and prosperous. We know that having women involved at every level of decision-making is strategic — and yet women are rarely included at the table where political, national, and international security decisions are made. This has undoubtedly reflected in several industries resulting in male dominance. Things are changing. Women are rising to the challenge and we all have a role in encouraging the girl child’s active participation in science, technology, engineering & mathematics. This forms of one of the key objectives of the SMART Africa initiative, a bold and innovative commitment from African Heads of State and Government to accelerate sustainable socioeconomic development on the continent. The Transform Africa Summit is the Smart Africa flagship event, the fifth summit began on the 14th of May 2019.
Highlights of the discussion re-echoed the fact that; ‘Gender diversity is in Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics fields remains a glaring issue. Non-traditional fields for women and girls, such as technology and engineering, especially severely lag behind. While companies are instituting policy and rolling out initiatives to improve gender diversity, there isn’t much change, and these fields are male dominated. There has to be changes for flexible work environment and labor policies adjustments so to provide opportunities to leverage technology such as remote working and virtual presence in order to empower women and allow them to contribute in organizational activities despite their many duties. even in the policy to ensure women are leading and in management in STEM fields, and organizations to be held accountable for the growth in numbers of women in STEM and in management.’
